Letter: Trump and GOP are aiding America‘s major adversary — that‘s treasonous

(Andrew Harnik | The Associated Press) In this June 21, 2017, file photo, former FBI Director Robert Mueller, the special counsel probing Russian interference in the 2016 election, departs Capitol Hill after a closed-door meeting in Washington.

Russia is at war with us, but instead of battlefield combat it is cyber warfare. Special counsel Robert Mueller’s indictments of Russian nationals confirm the overwhelming evidence that Russia interfered with the last election and is continuing to undermine our democratic system of government. Russia’s attacks threaten all of us, regardless of our political preferences. Our government should be taking immediate retaliatory action, such as strong economic sanctions, and installing effective cyber defenses to thwart these attacks.

But because President Trump and the political right benefited from Russian interference, and because Trump may be guilty of collusion, Republicans are hell-bent on shielding him, and therefore Russia, from the intense scrutiny that is urgently needed. Instead of vigorously pursuing truth, the GOP assaults Mueller and denounces our dedicated intelligence community, whose members work hard, 24/7, and often risk their lives, to keep us safe. This is the worst form of placing party above country.

The oath of office requires the president and members of Congress to defend our nation from all enemies, foreign and domestic, which President Trump and the Republicans are clearly not doing. In fact, they’re aiding our major adversary. This dereliction of patriotic duty is treasonous. Let’s remove these traitors in November.
